Classic 2D animation resaearch - Walt Disney

This type of animation is a more traditional way of animating. It involves the animator or artist hand drawing each frame. The animator will draw each frame making a slight change to the previous drawing. This is what makes the animation flow, although it can be very time consuming. This technique gives the illusion of movement. The 2D animated drawing are then fed into plastic cells and hand painted. The animated sequence is then put on top of a painted background image. In the clip below you can see how these tradition style of animations are created frame by frame. Traditional animation movies include Peter pan, sleeping beauty and Aladdin.
